COVID-19 Communications

July 13, 2020

We're sure many of you heard the recent government announcement about moving to Stage 3 of the Reopening Plan for Ontario. Although this will come into effect for our region on July 17, 2020, we’ve made the decision to delay reopening of our facilities for members until at least August 31, 2020

As you know, our facilities are multi-purpose, and over the summer a main focus is operating day camps. Day camp is a big need at the moment and we are proud to have the team and capacity to offer this service to families in our community. In choosing to operate day camps, we need to follow public health guidelines that limit the numbers of individuals in and out of spaces. As such, we are going to hold off on opening for members until our camp season is over.

Your health and wellness continues to be a priority for us and we are currently responding to this by offering a constant stream of new activities on our Virtual YMCA. We are also investigating other ways to keep you engaged this summer and will continue to keep you informed as we know more.

We know that you’re looking forward to coming back to your Y – and, trust us, we’re looking forward to having you back too! Thanks so much for your support and understanding in this decision. Do note, your payments will remain on hold and we will continue to communicate with you often about what you can expect when we're ready to welcome you back.

Zehrs - Give a Little, Help a Lot!

From July 10-26, Zehrs stores across Ontario are inviting shoppers to add $2 to their bill to support local YMCAs. With each donation, more children get the opportunity to play, learn and grow at the Y. Small acts lead to big results, so if you have a chance please shop at your local Zehrs and encourage your friends and family to do the same. We continue to be so grateful for your support.

Member Check-in Survey

We would love to hear from you as we continue to develop our plans for safely re-opening our spaces to all members. Several hundred members have already responded to this survey and if you are one of them, thank you! Your insight and feedback is so valuable to us.

July 3, 2020

We are continuing to work hard to be ready for you as soon as we are able to safely re-open our spaces. We are following government guidelines for Reopening the Province, which states that gyms and fitness facilities are included in Stage 3. Since our Region is currently in Stage 2 of this plan, we continue to remain closed to members. We're adding more virtual content each week, so please continue to stay connected to us and each other online.

Opening for Day Camps on July 6th, Still Closed for Members: A few weeks ago we got the green light from our provincial government that as part of Stage 2 of Ontario's Reopening plan, day camps are able to run, with certain safety restrictions in place. Our teams never stopped planning for this and starting on Monday, we're proud to be able still provide day camp options for families in our community. We will be utilizing our centres across Waterloo Region to safely provide day camp programs and we still remain closed for members.

We know you’re wondering when you can return to your Y. We are following the direction of local and provincial health authorities carefully to ensure the proper measures are in place before announcing our reopening.

As a reminder, you may have heard the recent announcement about pools and we want to let you know that as outlined in the Framework for Reopening the Province, gyms and fitness facilities are included in Stage 3. We understand you can't wait to get back to the Y - and we can’t wait to have you - but for now, in accordance with the Provincial government's direction, our pool will remain closed until we can safely reopen.

We’ve established key principles to guide how and when we will reactivate YMCA programs and services, driven by our commitment to your safety and that of our valued staff and volunteers. We will ensure our facilities meet the highest standards for hygiene and safety, including modifying programs and facility spaces to maintain safe physical distancing.

We look forward to sharing the details for reopening as soon as we can! Until then, you can enjoy your favourite workouts and activities for all ages at your Virtual YMCA.

Please note all membership fees remain on hold. We will provide updates in the future regarding fee reactivation in advance, along with our reopening details. Thank you for your patience and continued support.

Child Care FAQs

What is happening with our payments?

Families will not be charged any fees during this temporary service closure. Any fees paid pertaining to our closure period will be credited to your account and payments will be adjusted accordingly when we re-open. Some families have asked how they can help during this time. We have set up that you can arrange to donate your regular monthly fees and receive a tax receipt in return. If you are interested in this, you can donate here.

When will you be re-opening?

Due to the current government mandate still in place, we are not re-opening on April 6. Our re-open date will be an informed decision made with the support of Public Health and our municipal, provincial, and federal governments.

Will Child Care centres re-open if they cancel the school year?

The most recent provincial directive is that all schools remain closed until May 4. As the majority of our centres operate within school buildings, this directive would need to end or change before we could re-open.

Will I be charged the non-refundable deposit for summer care if I register for summer now?

Deposits will not be collected at this time. If COVID-19 continues and summer care is cancelled, any previous deposits will be refunded to you. If summer camp is cancelled, any previously paid deposits will be refunded.

Can I change my child’s schedule now for when the centre re-opens?

We understand that schedules may change due to the closure and will work with all families to support their needs. As such, we’re asking families to wait until we announce our re-open date and to email their Supervisors at that time. We will work to accommodate needs as we are able.

Summer Camp FAQs

Will you still run summer camp?

We're continuing to monitor this ever-evolving situation, and are working close with regional, provincial and national governments as well as Public Health officials to make the best possible decisions. As of right now we’ve not cancelled summer camp and will adjust our procedures according to Public Health guidelines. While we do not have a set date to announce whether camp is running, we commit to contacting you with new information as it is available.

Is registration still open?

Yes, we are still accepting registrations for the 2020 camp season.

What about payments?

We will not be taking any payments until we re-open.

COVID 19 Update & FAQ

As you know, our facilities have been shut down since the middle of March. Since that time we have launched the Virtual Y to keep you engaged, while providing tips and programs to take care of your mind, body, and spirit. We’re updating the site weekly, so be sure to check back often. We're also hoping to do some social media lives with our instructors. Be sure to follow us on Facebook for these events.

When will you re-open?

The government mandate for our facility to stay closed is still in place, and we are not re-opening on April 6. Our re-open date will be an informed decision made with the support of Public Health and our municipal, provincial, and federal governments.

What is happening with my membership and fees?

Currently, all memberships are suspended, and you are not being charged any fees. When we re-open, we will automatically lift this suspension, there are no actions you’ll need to take. If you had placed your membership on hold ahead of March 15, your payments will continue to be suspended until we re-open, and you do not have to take any actions. For any fees paid pertaining to our closure will be credited to your accounts and fees adjusted accordingly when we re-open.

How can we help?

Many of our members have reached out asking how they can help us during this time. We’re blown away by this generosity. An easy way for you to do this is through the Virtual Y. To members who have already donated, thank you.

How can members connect with other members to ensure their Y friends are safe?

We’re not able to provide member information without their consent. We encourage you to follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter), and, once again, to visit the Virtual Y. It is also our intention to provide regular member updates during the shutdown period. The health and well-being of each of our members, your families and our community remains our priority. Thank you again for your patience and understanding as we navigate the new realities of COVID-19. Please continue to follow Public Health recommendations as we work together to flatten the curve.

Refunds are being processed as quickly as possible for March Break Camps and Aquatics Leadership Courses that have been cancelled because of the closure.

Facility Closures

The COVID-19 situation is rapidly evolving. This is a new, and unprecedented, reality for all of us, especially those in people-facing service industries.

As of Sunday, March 15 at 8:00pm we have made the following decisions in Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Stratford-Perth, Guelph and Wellington:

ALL Health and Fitness facilities (gyms) – CLOSED until April 6
ALL Camp and Outdoor Service locations – CLOSED until April 6

ALL Child Care Centres - CLOSED until April 6

ALL Immigrant and Employment Services (Kitchener, Waterloo and Stratford) - Alternative services offered, please contact ahead of time

ALL Youth Centres and Community-Based Programs – CLOSED until April 6

Our YMCA provides a broad range of services and programming to diverse sections of our communities – many of whom have been identified at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19. As such, we’ve committed to addressing this situation and basing all of our decisions with a people-focused lens. We’re collaborating with public health units and other leaders in our industries to make informed decisions that seek to keep our members, families, volunteers and staff healthy and well.

Your health and wellbeing remain a priority to us. Please know this is a pre-emptive solution, a way for us to work with public health to try to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. During this shutdown, we’ll be committing to a deep clean of our facilities.

Know that while we’re closing some of our buildings during this time, your Y isn’t going anywhere. We continue to explore ways for us to be here for you – both during these unprecedented times and beyond. You may be wondering how you can best help us at this time, and to that we say be ready to come back to us when we reopen.

Fitness for Breath

Regular exercise is of vital importance to people with COPD, in fact it is one of the most powerful tools to manage COPD.

The best way to learn how to exercise is to join a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

The YMCA now offers an instructor-led exercise class geared toward those with COPD or even those looking for post-rehabiltation fitness classes to improve their overall lifestyle.

FREE for Members and Non-Members!
